Wield a real samurai sword under the guidance
of a master swordsman and samurai descendant.
Over 90 minutes, guests will delve into the history of swords and Samurai, enjoy a performance of sword skills, and experience the thrill of wielding a real sword.
Samurai Juku is located above an ancient armorer in the heart of Kyoto, close to Nijo Castle, the old seat of Japan’s shoguns in the old capital.
Our sword master, Kawata-sensei, has dedicated his life to the art of Iaido, and won some of Japan’s most prestigious competitions. He will be your guide as you experience a slice of Samurai life.
Our sessions are hosted in English or Japanese. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate other languages at this time.

Dress in the clothes of the Samurai.
Learn a little about the history of Samurai and swords in Japan.
Watch a performance of Iaido (the art of swordsmanship).
Learn about form, posture, and how to grip a sword.
Using replica swords, practice sheathing and unsheathing.
Master a few basic sword moves.
Using your newly acquired skills get to grips with a real Samurai sword.
End the session by slicing through a roll of tatami (straw matting)!
Your basic Samurai training is complete.
Samurai Juku is located in a traditional Kyoto Machiya, right in the heart of Nishijin (Kyoto’s old Weaving District). It is a short bus ride from Nijo Castle & the city centre.

At Samurai Juku we use real swords. Out of concern for safety, only children over 14 can participate in the experience.
Children from 7-13 years old can observe & handle wooden, practice swords. 5,000 yen per child.
Children under 6 years old are free.
1 person: 20,000 yen.
2 people: 35,000 yen.
3 people: 45,000 yen.
4 people or more: 60,000 yen.
